Update on Tree Debris Clean Up - Tree Trimming Starts
January 17, 2008
The City of Joplin announces that approximately half of the first pass has been completed by the ice storm contractor Jimmie Crowder Excavating (Crowder). Tree debris collection trucks are now operating in all parts of the City, (whereas originally the operation was contained to areas west of Main Street). Expect trucks to pick up debris, which has been placed by the residents at the curb, from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Saturday. Residents must bring their debris from all areas of their yard to the curb because Crowder’s equipment and personnel are not allowed to enter private property. Residents are encouraged to rake up the smaller tree limbs not picked up in the first pass and place at the curb. The City also urges residents to move their vehicles off of City streets to enable Crowder to work efficiently. If Crowder is unable to collect tree debris due to vehicles parked on the street, the monitors will try to identify the owners by knocking on doors and will place a flyer on the windshield.
The City also announces the start of Crowder’s tree trimming operation in the first-pass collection areas. Crowder’s bucket trucks will cut away damaged or dangerous limbs, over two inches in diameter, from trees either located on or hanging over right-of-ways. Tree trimming personnel will then place the limbs at the curb for Crowder to pick up.
Crowder will make a second pass through the City picking up additional tree limbs that have been set out by residents and clean up the smaller debris left behind from the first pass. Larger limbs DO NOT need to be cut up as previously suggested. Due to FEMA funding, a deadline must be placed on the collection of tree limbs. Therefore the City will announce when the second pass of limb collection will start in time for residents to place their limbs at the curb.
Per FEMA’s recommendations and grant funding, the temporary debris drop-off sites at Cunningham Park, Humphrey Park, and Public Works Center have been closed and are being monitored by the Joplin Police Department. The City WILL NOT re-open or add any drop-off sites.
The City will continue to notify the public regarding the ice storm clean up through the news media, city web site www.joplinmo.org, and Government Access Channel 22 of CableOne’s system.
