9th Company
Fedor Bondarchuk, the son of noted Russian filmmaker Sergei Bondarchuk, debuts as a director with the harrowing and relentless military drama 9TH COMPANY, set between 1988 and 1989 at the tail end of the U.S.S.R. Afghani war (the Soviet equivalent of Vietnam). The picture opens in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, in late 1988, when military trainees Petrovsky, Ryaba, Chugun, Stas, Pinochet, Lyutev and Vorobyev are whipped into shape at a training camp by the brutal, sadistic commander, Warrant Officer Dygalo - prior to being sent off to the front lines. After several one-by-one dalliances with the local whore, Snow White, and a cautionary lecture on the history, geography and culture of Afghanistan (which most of the men sleep through), the trainees head off to battle - first to the Bagram air base, then to the Afghani province of Khost to secure supply lines. But nothing can begin to prepare them for the brutal devastation into which they are plunged, or the relentless tide of slaughter that scatters thousands of Soviet victims in its wake. (2 hr. 19 min.)

A Quiet Little Marriage
A young couple who have different ideas about the future of their relationship find themselves drifting into a domestic civil war in this independent drama. Dax (Cy Carter) and Olive (Mary Elizabeth Ellis) have been married for a few years, and while they clearly love one another and have a satisfying sex life, their difficult relationships with their families manifest themselves in very different ways. Olive is looking after her father Bruce (Michael O'Neill) as his memories and personality fall prey to Alzheimer's syndrome, and the loss has made her eager to have a baby. Meanwhile, Dax has become the unwilling benefactor of his brother Jackson (Jimmi Simpson), a drug addict who often stops by needing cash or a place to crash, usually in the company of his sullen, silent girlfriend Sylvia (Lucy DeVito). Jackson's dependence on Dax has poisoned him on the notion of having children, and the tug of war between Olive and Dax over potential parenthood has seen them both take drastic, ridiculous action, as Olive deliberately sabotages her own diaphragm in hopes of getting pregnant while Dax counters by putting birth control pills in her breakfast. A QUIET LITTLE MARRIAGE was the first feature film from writer and director Mo Perkins. (1 hr. 25 min.)

Air Front 2: The Yanks Are Coming '42-'45
During the 2 1/2-years that followed the Third Reich's 1939 invasion of Poland, Great Britain's Royal Air Force (RAF) generally stood alone in the battle against the Nazis, enabling Hitler's troops to permeate most of Europe. When December 1941 rolled around, however, the balance of power shifted dramatically. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor dragged the United States Armed Forces into the war and inadvertently bolstered Allied aerial capability, especially in European skies. The Allied air campaign became an aggressive, seemingly unstoppable war of attrition against the Nazis. The tide then began to shift away from fascism and toward democracy, as U.S. and British fliers liberated most of Western Europe from Hitler's iron thumb. Via a combination of archival footage and historical commentary, this documentary program tells the story of that spectacular transformation. (70 hr.)

Alien Time Machine: Encounters from Another Dimension
Though accounts of supernatural phenomena in the early 21st century are hardly uncommon, few can rival the otherworldly claims of controversial author Terry Le Riche Walters (WHO ON EARTH AM I?). Among other chronicles, Walters has attested to extraterrestrial visitations and abductions, spiritual prophecies from other dimensions, and (in what may be his most extreme account) the presence of a time machine built using alien technology. As hosted by Karen Frandsen of Eerie Investigations, a paranormal think tank, this program brings together Walters and a group of legitimate researchers who gather to discuss the time machine and the technology belying it. (80 hr.)

Art of War
As directed by Richard Pawelko, this unusual documentary investigates one of the most brutal of all historical conflicts, the First World War (over 65 million slain between 1914-18) not from a political, social or military perspective, but from an artistic one. The film begins with the fact that a myriad of national art movements blossomed during the Great War, including Expressionism, Impressionism, Realism, Cubism and Futurism (and encompassing everyone from Chagall to Spencer). It then reminds us that each of the school, demonstrated a dramatic transition from depictions of war as admirable and patriotic to anarchically destructive. To bring this idea home, the program observes depictions of battle created by numerous early 20th century artists in countless styles, and unveils some startling threads with common historical antecedents. (49 hr.)

Art of the Cross
As shot at art galleries and museums throughout Europe and the United States, this ambitious documentary program takes as its central thesis the idea that over the eras, Christ's crucifixion has thematically dominated Western art more than any other motif. Moreover, as the centuries have passed, each new generation has filtered the cross through the lens of its own unique social and theological preoccupations, and the stylistic currents of the day. ART OF THE CROSS undertakes a chronological journey through history to examine and comment on shifting visual perspectives of the cross, and what those various perspectives can tell us about the eras from which they emerged. Chopin at the Opera
Although he had enormous talent that could easily have propelled him to pen a libretto, and by all accounts worshipped the operatic medium, Frédéric Chopin (1810-49) never worked within that form. The composer was certainly surrounded by it, however, as an ardent fan of bel canto singer Giuditta Pasta, a close friend of Vincenzo Bellini, and a lover of arranger Pauline Viardot . This unusual documentary finds a trio of singers, an actress and a classical pianist gathering at the castle of Chopin's paramour, George Sand, in Nohat, France, to discuss Chopin's experiences with opera and feelings toward it. (60 hr.)

Cinevardaphoto
In this Agnes Varda-directed film, a collection of three of her shorts are combined. The shorts are SALUT LES CUBAINS from 1963, ULYSSES from 1982, and a new film called YDESSA, THE BEARS, AND ETC from 2004. Fascinating in the way that they show Varda's progression as a photographer and filmmaker, the films are artistic, personal, and moving. YDESSA, which is the first film in the trio, allows Varda to be a photography critic. She takes viewers to an art gallery in Munich where she analyzes an installation of found photographs by Ydessa Hendeles, a Canadian curator, eccentric, and teddy bear collector. With a shock of red-rinsed hair and a Goth fashion sense, Ydessa is a perfect subject for Varda to study on camera. Narrating with imaginative commentary and editing in bits of entertaining dialogue from Ydessa, she describes the project--which consists of thousands of photographs from 1930s Germany, each containing a teddy bear. The next segment, ULYSSES, deals with one of Varda's early photo compositions. It shows a man--Varda's former neighbor--standing naked on the beach, with a young boy seated next to him and a dead goat in the foreground. She recreates the photo in various ways, pulls it apart, examines it further, and then reaches for outside analysis. Interviews with the subjects, now older adults, lead nowhere. So she has children draw pictures of the photograph and feed them to a goat. Both introspective and amusing, ULYSSES reveals quaint details of Varda's experience as a young artist in Paris in the 1950s. The final short in CINEVARDAPHOTO is the whimsical SALUT LES CUBAINS. Varda stitches together still photographs of a trip she took to Cuba in the 1960s, drawing a vague yet festive story out of them. (1 hr. 36 min.)

French Film
English hang-ups about romance get satirically filtered through the perspective of French movies in this witty, cinematically-literate comedy helmed by British director Jackie Oudney and scripted by Aschlin Ditta. The creators set up two narratives: in a framing device, Eric Cantona stars as the elitist, pretentious French writer-director Thierry Grimandi, who could use a lesson in humility; he operates according to the mantra, "I consider myself lucky firstly because I am French, secondly because I make movies, thirdly because I understand love." As Grimandi periodically crops up to pontificate on film and relationships, a second narrative emerges. Hugh Bonneville stars as Jed Winter, a smug, unhappy British journalist enduring a super-dysfunctional relationship with long-term girlfriend Cheryl (Victoria Hamilton). She just rejected his marriage proposal out of dissatisfaction for the lack of romantic chemistry in their relationship; they tentatively remain together, but that all seems poised to change when Jed begins to develop feelings for his friend Marcus's girl, Sophie (Anne-Marie Duff) - and it just so happens that Marcus falls for someone else, leaving the situation wide open for Jed to waltz in and sweep Sophie off her feet. Michel Legrand & Friends: 50 Years of Music and Movies
Born in 1932, French composer Michel Legrand moved swiftly into film and television and attained celebrity by his early thirties with his Oscar-nominated work on Jacques Demy's THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG (1964). He staked career and reputation on a brilliant signature style commonly termed "haunting": heavy use of violins and low-key, ascetic orchestrations. The choices paid off: Legrand soon became a Hollywood fixture, and he scored everything from THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (1968) to Barbara Streisand's YENTL (1983). This musical tribute to the songwriter finds Legrand and a plethora of celebrities gathering at the MGM Grand's Garden Arena in Las Vegas for various interpretations of the Frenchman's tunes. Selections include: Steve Lawrence on "Happy," Legrand himself conducting a 66-piece orchestra on "Theme from 'Brian's Song'"), George Benson on "Watch What Happens", Dionne Warwick on "How Do You Keep the Music Playing," and much, much more. As an added bonus, the release also interpolates additional performances not seen on television, and a historic performance of a Legrand tune by the eminent Ray Charles. (120 hr.)

In this documentary, National Geographic visits the Continental Divide to examine the collapse of the park's most sizeable ice mountain, and asks probing questions about the reasons for this geological transformation. The Jeff Koons Show
Few artists courted as much controversy during their lifetimes as Jeff Koons. Born in January 1955, Koons worked on Wall Street as a commodity broker before jumping ship, converting his SoHo loft into an art studio, and turning out some of the most audacious works of art in the late 20th century. Examples included balloon animals made of stainless steel with mirror surfaces, explicit photographs of himself and his porn star wife, and porcelain statues of Michael Jackson holding his chimp Bubbles. Unsurprisingly, some declared Koons a genius; others perceived him as a colossal fraud. But he reeled in such considerable wealth for his creations that he began to set records on the auction block. Koons, however, saw himself as the greatest living artist of the period. Documentarian Alison Chernick helmed this in-depth and occasionally comical biographical profile of Koons, which charts his unusual and remarkable career. The program includes interviews with such art world fixtures as Dan Cameron, Julian Schnabel and Jerry Saltz, each of whom turn up to comment on Koons. (65 hr.)

The Judy Garland Show, Vol. 5
As a staple of the CBS Sunday night line-up for a very short time in the early 1960s (September 1963-March 1964), the one-season musical variety series THE JUDY GARLAND SHOW endured a number of radical format changes in a consistent (and unsuccessful) attempt to find long-term footing. Despite its many stylistic variations, however, it did net Emmy nominations and boasted spectacular performances by Garland and her guests. As issued by Classic World Productions, this fifth volume of episodes from the series contains two full episodes out of the program's complete 26-episode run - one that aired on Sunday, January 5, 1964, featuring Steve Allen, Jayne Meadows and Mel Tormé (and generally labeled 'Episode 11') and another that ran on February 16, 1964 (generally labeled 'Episode 21'). The Occult: The Truth Behind the Word
Though much of Judaeo-Christian society tends to associate the occult with something dark, sinister and evil, this program argues quite the opposite. Springboarding from the literal definition of the 'occult' as 'hidden knowledge,' the film attempts to put a positive spin on contemporary occultic behavior and activity by associating it with sources of long-sought wisdom and a deep, elusive level of alternate reality. To bring these ideas across, the documentary brings in occultic philosophers including Brian Allan, O.H. Krill and James Earnshaw - who systematically tie occultic thought to such pagan practices as ritual magick and shamanism. (75 hr.)

Nine years before his death, screen icon Boris Karloff (FRANKENSTEIN) turned up for two seasons on NBC, as host of the horror anthology series THRILLER (1960-62). This fourteen-disc set from Image Entertainment contains the full and complete series as it originally aired, with over fifty hours of special features, including: 27 new audio commentaries featuring cast, crew and various experts on the horror genre; episode promos; a series promo; isolated music scores; and production and promotional still galleries.
