Baby It's You
Like GREASE without the song and dance, BABY IT'S YOU is a coming-of-age story about two mismatched lovers--Jill (Rosanna Arquette), a popular Jewish student about to go to college, and Sheik (Vincent Spano), an Italian trashman's son nicknamed after a condom brand. Beginning with the characters' love affair in a New Jersey high school in the 1960s, the film doesn't stop at senior prom night; instead, the film follows their complicated relationship as Jill goes to a woman's college and Sheik attempts to make it as a singer in Florida. The film, which director John Sayles considers one of his most autobiographical, was the first picture he made with financing from a major studio. After viewing Sayles's cut of the film, Paramount wanted to reedit the film to focus only on the characters' romance in high school. Sayles threatened to take his name off the project, and after the studio cut of the film did not test better with focus groups, his version of the film prevailed. Featuring Arquette in her first starring role, BABY IT'S YOU is an unsentimental look at one cross-class relationship. (1 hr. 45 min.)

Batman: The Movie
This full-length Batman movie was unleashed during the height of the television show's popularity in 1966, taking America to dizzying levels of superhero camp it had never before experienced. In stark contrast with the many dark and gritty incarnations of Batman, the film features all four of the famous crime fighter's most dastardly and cunning adversaries--the Penguin, the Joker, the Riddler, and Catwoman--joining forces to take over the world thanks to a De-Hydrator that turns people into piles of dust. The Caped Crusader and his trusty sidekick Robin pull out all the stops to thwart the bad guys, even if it means a BIFF! or a KA-POW! Before Keaton, before Bale, Adam West was...Batman. (1 hr. 45 min.)

Boomerang/ Harlem Nights
BOOMERANG: Marcus Graham (Eddie Murphy) is a successful young marketing executive who has never lacked for attention from women. But one day the tables are turned, and he falls for a high-powered female executive who treats him the same way he's been treating women for the last 15 years. Marcus realizes that it's not so fun to be on the other side of objectification and rejection, and he soon finds himself becoming a quivering bundle of insecurities. The question is whether he will learn enough from the experience to see that true love has been right under his nose all along.HARLEM NIGHTS: Sugar Ray (Richard Pryor) became Quick's (Eddie Murphy) adopted father when an adolescent Quick saved his life. More than two decades later, in 1938, Ray runs the most popular club in Harlem, with Quick as his right hand man. Before long, Bugsy, a white mobster (Michael Lerner) comes knocking for a piece of the club's action in the form of weekly protection money, with a crooked cop (Danny Aiello) as the muscle and a dangerous woman (Jasmine Guy) as the bait. But by fixing a big boxing match, Ray and Quick just may be able to thwart Bugsy's plan and make off with a wad of his cash in the process. Murphy wrote and directed.

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Live At The Royal Albert Hall
Songs such as "Bad Moon Rising" and "Proud Mary" really established Creedence Clearwater Revival's name in the early part of their career. The group is now warmly regarded as a classic rock act, but this live recording, recorded at London's Royal Albert Hall, was shot in 1970. The band, led by acclaimed singer/songwriter John Fogerty, works through a set of future classics as they take to the stage, including versions of "Born on the Bayou" and "Tombstone Shadow."

Daniel
Sidney Lumet's DANIEL is fictionalized retelling of the true of story of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were executed as Soviet spies in the 1950s. Dead and Gone
Celebrated horror novelist Harry Shannon's debut screenplay is in the unusually assured hands of first-time director Yossi Sasson with DEAD AND GONE. When retired Hollywood executive Frankie falls into a coma, her unhappy trophy husband, young actor Jack Wade, simply wants to put the regretted marriage behind him...and finally inherit the assets he so needs. How to do that? It's as easy as bringing Frankie back to Jack's cabin so he can quietly kill her and move on. The only problem is, the cabin is the very same one in which a man murdered his entire family 40 years earlier. After doing the dirty deed, Jack begins to suspect that Frankie isn't truly dead, and the lines between imagination and what's real begin to blur for the poor guy. Kyle Gass, one half of comedy-rock band Tenacious D, and horror regular Zack Ward co-star in this scary tale.

Dear America - The Royal Diaries
What do Cleopatra of the Nile, Isabelle of Spain, and Elizabeth I of the Tudors in England have in common? They were all, in their respective times, teenage princesses! DEAR AMERICA: THE ROYAL DIARIES, as adapted from the Scholastic book series, will have modern teens and tweens relating to girls they just might have been friends with had they been alive centuries ago. Made with care to capture the authenticity and historical accurateness of the time in which a given princess lived and what her life would have been like, this three-episode release aims to change pre-conceived notions of how to view the long-ago past.

Diary of a Vampire - The Legacy of Bram Stoker

Drillbit Taylor
DRILLBIT TAYLOR tells the story of three nerdy adolescents who, on their very first day of high school, find themselves the target of a merciless, near psychotic bully. The friends band together and pool their funds to hire a personal bodyguard, Drillbit Taylor (Owen Wilson). Taylor, a homeless beach bum and AWOL army soldier, plans to con the kids just long enough to pull together the money needed to amscray off to Canada. A momentary flash of a conscience and a growing crush on a teacher at the boys' high school, however, compels Drillbit to stick around, do the right thing, and ultimately save the day. The movie is fluff to the extreme, and because it's from the duo of Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow it's easy to long for more. There's a remarkably talented comic cast here, though, that includes, among others, Upright Citizens Brigade veteran Matt Walsh, former Daily Show correspondent Beth Littleford, and indie favorite Frank Whaley. And while it never reaches the near poetic heights of vulgarity to be found in SUPERBAD and KNOCKED UP, one can sense Rogen and Apatow's supreme wit poking around the edges of the film. Where DRILLBIT does succeed, however, is as a fun movie for pre- and early-adolescent boys. KNOCKED UP and 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN deal with some adult subject matter, meaning the plots are driven by issues that 13-year-olds most likely can not relate to, and SUPERBAD is raunchy to the point where parents might not want their kids to see it until they can at least drive. DRILLBIT, on the other hand, strikes a nice middle ground, as it deals with the age-old problem of the high school bully and throws in just enough raunch & roll to keep the sleepover rowdy until dawn. (1 hr. 42 min.)

(1 hr. 32 min.)

Gunfight at the O.K. Corral/ Last Train From Gun Hill
GUNFIGHT AT THE OK. CORRAL: Of all the film versions of the famed 1881 gunfight, this one, starring Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp and Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday, probably has the highest testosterone quotient. Focusing on the friendship between the forthright, responsible sheriff and the risk-taking, consumptive gambler, it suggests that their relationship is based on this opposition of qualities. Wyatt's stormy romance with gambler Laura Benbow (Rhonda Fleming) and Doc's rivalry with Johnny Ringo (John Ireland) over the affections of local madam Kate Fisher (Jo Van Fleet) add to the tension preceding the final showdown. When Wyatt's brothers, Tombstone lawmen, ask for his help in evening the odds against Ike Clanton (Lyle Bettger), his brothers, the McLowerys, and Johnny Ringo, Doc decides to join his friend. After Wyatt gets to town, he quickly puts a crimp in Ike's cattle-rustling activities, which leads the outlaw to set him up for assassination. A mix-up leads to Wyatt's youngest brother, Jimmy (Martin Milner), getting killed in Wyatt's place. Doc tries to talk him out of revenge, but the enraged lawman will have none of it, and the scene is set for the historic final gun battle. This solid, well-made Western is hoisted by the fine screenplay by novelist Leon Uris and the charisma of the two stars, as well as an outstanding suporting cast, including Dennis Hopper, Jack Elam, Lee Van Cleef, Earl Holliman, and Kenneth Tobey.LAST TRAIN FROM GUN HILL: Kirk Douglas stars as U.S. Marshal Matt Morgan. When Morgan's wife is raped and murdered because she's a half-breed, the killers leave behind a saddle that he recognizes as the property of his friend Craig Belden (Anthony Quinn), a wealthy cattle rancher in the nearby town of Gun Hill. Realizing that Belden's son Rick (Earl Holliman) is one of the killers, Morgan travels to Gun Hill to arrest him. Although sympathetic about the death of Morgan's wife, Belden predictably refuses to turn over his son when the marshal makes known the purpose of his visit, claiming that Morgan owes him for having once saved his life. Not only must Morgan locate and arrest Rick, but he has to do so before the last train leaves Gun Hill at 9 p.m. Although the whole town, which is virtually owned by Belden, seems to be against him, the marshal receives some much-needed help from Linda (Carolyn Jones), the sharp local madam. The entire cast is excellent and John Sturges's direction is exemplary in this solid if unsurprising genre exercise.

Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The/ Shane
THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE: In John Ford's stark, melancholy swan song for the conventional frontier Western, aged Senator Ransom Stoddard (James Stewart) returns to the small town of Shinbone with his wife, Hallie (Vera Miles), for the funeral of his friend, Tom Doniphan (John Wayne), where he recounts for reporters his relationship with the man. His arrival in the town years earlier as a newly minted lawyer had been welcomed with a vicious beating by Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin), a flamboyant thug hired by powerful business interests fearful of the lawyer's intentions to stump for statehood. Doniphan, a rancher and feared gunman, finds Stoddard unconscious, takes him into town, and continues to protect him, particularly after coming to realize that the woman he loves cares more for the lawyer. Despite Doniphan's warnings that the only law in the region comes at the end of a gun barrel, the stubborn lawyer insists on teaching the illiterate townspeople about the rule of law in a democratic society. When Stoddard is elected as the regional delegate to the territorial convention, Valance baits the politician, a notoriously inept gunman, into a showdown. SHANE: George Stevens' classic Western, adaptated from the Jack Schaefer novel, stars Alan Ladd in the title role. Riding the ranges of Wyoming's Grand Tetons, Shane stops at the farm of homesteader Joe Starrett (Van Heflin) just before Ryker (Emile Meyer), a powerful and predatory cattleman, arrives with his hired muscle to make the farmer a threatening offer for land that he intends to get by any means necessary. When Shane lets the cattle baron know that his gun will back Starrett if there's any trouble, the grateful homesteader offers the stranger a job as a hired hand, which he accepts. Joe's young son Joey (Brandon de Wilde) is drawn to the quiet stranger, whose difference from the men he knows is confirmed by the accidental revelation of a gunfighter's lightning reflexes. Shane becomes a valuable asset to the farm, but is slowly drawn into the continuing hostilities between the two opposing groups. To complicate matters, Shane feels an unspoken, and unwanted, attraction to Starrett's wife Marian (Jean Arthur). This creates a sense of ambivalence in Joe, whose son already idolizes the gunslinger. Stevens' meticulous artistry imbues the simple Western with the mythic aura of an Arthurian legend, as Loyal Griggs' beautifully composed images provide the canvas for career performances by Ladd, Heflin, Arthur, and de Wilde, in what many regard as the finest western ever made.

With the help of his cousin (Lewis) who happens to be a veterinarian, Honey Talk tries to fix a race. But Honey Talk isn't so consumed by his money troubles that he can't take the time to fall in love with Phyllis (Marjie Millar). (1 hr. 40 min.)

Mortuary / Bloody Mary
MORTUARY: The members of the Doyle family think they are heading for a new and prosperous life when they move to a small California town. But their chosen line of business, running a funeral home and cemetery, proves problematic--especially when some undead spirits come back to haunt the beleaguered Doyles. Horror film legend Tobe Hooper (THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE) directed this low budget shocker. BLOODY MARY: Three nurses at a psychiatric home foolishly decide to investigate an urban legend in this gore-drenched horror feature. The legend states that a long-dead murderess will be brought back to life if someone chants "Bloody Mary" three times within the walls of the institution--and the three nurses face a race to stay alive after enacting the ancient ritual.

My Blueberry Nights
With his first English-language film, beloved Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai's touch loses none of the seductive luster and magic that made his Chinese films so popular. MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS follows the fortunes of Elizabeth (Norah Jones), who after having been left by her boyfriend, sets out across America to find herself and recover. She makes a stop in Memphis, where she pulls double-duty at a diner by day and a bar at night, and watches the disintegration of another pair of troubled lovers (David Strathairn and Rachel Weisz). She moves on to Nevada where she befriends a vivacious card player and smalltime hustler (a delightfully saucy Natalie Portman) who challenges her notions of contentment. However, it is New York City and the arms of an English café owner (Jude Law) for which Elizabeth's heart truly longs and ultimately returns. While MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS isn't Wong's best film--as it suffers from some clunky, heavy-handed dialogue and some frustratingly broad performances--it still contains all of the hallmarks of his aesthetic, and is therefore hard not to fall for. The film is undeniably beautiful, and features the director's trademark visual sense: shimmering neons, lush chiaroscuro, and swirling slow-motion images. It makes for a seductive view of America, one populated by swaggering, yet deeply melancholic drifters that listen to Otis Redding and Ruth Brown, drink too much, and love even more. The sadness and tears that emerge from America's taverns in the wee hours are as breathtakingly alluring as its natural landscapes. In Wong's hands, everything is cast in the light of joy-life and death, suffering and happiness-and the same goes for his understanding of America. Whether this America ever existed is wholly irrelevant; for when you watch a Wong movie, you happily enter his country, wherever that may be. (1 hr. 30 min.)

This is the story of SANTO EN EL MUSEO DE CERA. That's not all though. This release is, in fact, a double feature. This amusing sex farce updates age-old concepts about love, sex, and hot lesbians. A new supercomputer (with vague ties to the afterlife) spits out random e-mails that tell when people will die, or in the case of suave, affluent groom-to-be Roderick Blank (Simon Baker), a list of all the girls he ever slept with and ever will sleep with. There's 70 he's never even met, and he's due to be married in 11 days! Naturally his wedding is off and Roderick goes gallivanting around the city, crossing off names and gradually realizing the pitfalls of empty one-nighters. Meanwhile the mysterious "Death Nell" (Winona Ryder) is seducing and destroying a stream of deserving louts, spray painting anguished poetry on their walls and creating a media sensation. These two are bound to cross paths, and when they finally do, comeuppance is in the cards, with a bloody vengeance. Director-screenwriter Daniel Waters (HEATHERS) delivers laughs from brows both low and high, with Baker revealing a flair for sophisticated comedy beneath his mellow scruff. The slew of actresses comprising "the list" turn in uniformly fine work, with Julie Bowen a standout as the hot but "just friends" gal pal. Still, it's all stolen in the ninth inning by the radiantly off-her-rocker Ryder as the girl men fall for, permanently; with her big eyes, dark hair and myriad tics she shines like a crazy beautiful diamond. The spot-on score is by Rolfe Kent (SIDEWAYS, ABOUT SCHMIDT). (1 hr. 56 min.)

Tyler Perry's House of Payne - Vol. 2
Playwright and movie box office phenomenon Tyler Perry (MADEA'S FAMILY REUNION) conquers the time-honored American tradition of the sitcom with this irreverent, zany, occasionally harrowing look at multi-generational family life. Patriarch and fire chief Curtis "Pops" Payne is like a Bill Cosby-Danny Tanner hybrid who's been hit with a mean stick and taken some crazy pills as he doles out loving insults, such as insisting his adult nephew C.J. is "beige" rather than black. Not that Pops doesn't have every right to administer some good-natured ribbing; with C.J. and his kids moving in with Uncle Pops's family and Pops's grown son Calvin continually stopping by to mooch money, food, and the washing machine, it's only natural to get a little testy! This batch of episodes 20-40 takes on yet another array of familial and social issues--from AIDS and newly discovered paternity to excessive shower-taking and possible OCD--and backhands them into the comedy stratosphere with heart and hilarity.

Vanilla Sky/ The Firm
VANILLA SKY: Director Cameron Crowe (JERRY MAGUIRE, ALMOST FAMOUS) teams up with Tom Cruise once again in an adaptation of Alejandro Amenabar's 1997 Spanish film OPEN YOUR EYES. Cruise plays David Aames, a playboy publisher leading a seemingly charmed life. His most recent playmate is his "friend" Julie Gianni (Cameron Diaz), who cares for David more than he realizes. When David meets the fetching Sofia Serrano (Penélope Cruz) at his birthday party, he awakens to the possibility of what true love can feel like, leaving Julie distraught. However, after an accident that changes David's life, he is forced to rethink his choices. This psychological thriller becomes roller coaster ride of flashbacks as David tries to make sense of all that has happened, relaying some surreal experiences to a psychiatrist (Kurt Russell) after being charged with murder. The film's message may differ for each viewer, but it does make one bold point: every action has consequences.THE FIRM: Sydney Pollack directs Tom Cruise in this fast-paced legal thriller based on John Grisham's best-selling novel. Lured by extraordinary financial perks, Mitch McDeere, a young and hungry Harvard Law student, turns down offers at the top law firms to take a position at a small but wealthy Memphis firm. Mitch, a boy from the wrong side of the tracks fueled by ambition and greed, ignores his wife Abby's initial misgivings about the suspiciously paternalistic practices of his new employers. It's only when two of his fellow lawyers die in a mysterious accident that Mitch begins to share her apprehensions. He then launches an investigation into the true nature of the firm and discovers that it is a front for a complex and sinister web of organized crime, one from which no lawyer has managed to escape alive. Solid storytelling and fine performances bring this seemingly improbable situation straight into reality.
